The benefits of using Biomass as a fuel are numerous


Biomass as a fuel source is Carbon Neutral . Biomass as a Fuel can provide steam & electricity and serves as a way to dispose of agricultural waste. In addition, steam, a byproduct of power generation, can be used for other applications, thereby increasing local incomes and reducing the need to burn fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels damage the environment around us whereas Biomass fuels saves the environment.

Biomass fuels are evaluated on the basis of their physical properties (density, size distribution, humidity, foreign matter) and chemical properties (calorific value, proximate analyses, ultimate analyses, ash analyses, and ash-melting behavior).

Biomass can be derived from a variety of sources, and it’s essential to understand the properties and chemical composition of each one. Some biomass needs pre-treatment before the fuel is fed into a Boiler where it is burned.

Corn distillers grain also known as : -


In Wet Form : - Spent grains, wet distillers grains, distillers wet grains, WDG
In Dry Form  : -  Dried distillers grains, distillers dried grains,DDG.

In distilleries, the mash is filtered after the liquefaction step, producing wort and a solid by-product called draff or distillers spent grain. The wort undergoes further fermentation while the draff is dried or pressed before being fed to animals.

Advantages of feeding distiller’s grains

  • Distillers grains have 25 to 35 percent protein dry matter content.
  • Wet and dry distiller’s grains have about 110 and 95 percent the energy value of corn grain, respectively.
    Distiller’s grains are also a good source of phosphorus and can reduce or eliminate the need for phosphorus supplementation.
  • It is less likely to upset the rumen and create acidosis compared to corn .

  • Adjust sulphur , phosphorus and calcium content in diet.
  • Feed no more than 15 percent of diet dry matter as dry distiller grains.

    • Disadvantages of feeding distiller’s grains
  • The nutrient composition of distiller’s grains can be variable due to differences in the processes within ethanol plants over time as well as differences in production between ethanol plants. In addition, solubles are added back to distiller’s grains in differing proportions, which further increases nutrient variability.
  • Sulfur levels in distiller’s grains range from 0.35 to 1.4 percent, which can potentially cause health concerns in beef cattle. Cattle have a nutrient requirement for sulfur of 0.15 percent dry matter — with a maximum tolerable threshold of 0.4 percent (NRBC, 2016).
  • It is extremely important for producers to consider all of the sulfur sources that will be consumed by cattle before deciding to include distiller’s grains or related products in their feeding programs. Ranches with high molybdenum in forages also pose a risk to cattle when distiller’s grains are fed.
